THE C-WORD “Consultant”

In a recent conversation about my marketing efforts I was warned to keep the “c-word” out of my materials. Apparently many small business owners subscribe to the unwritten manual of business practices that warns: “Consultants cost a lot of money and they just tell you how to spend more money.” However, this myth is not true. Consultants are a vital resource and part of any happy business owner’s toolbox.Picking the right consultants, trainers, advisers, and coaches is an essential part of running a successful business. In a recent B2B breakfast at the Central Bucks Chamber of Commerce, Jonathan Otto owner of Penn Valley Constructors spoke about his years in business. He underscored the importance of advisers and vendors in his business. He had to convince the other partners in his organization to get past their skepticism and rely on the right experts. Good isn’t always good enough. It is often worth paying a little extra to have someone put the time and effort in to truly understand your business needs and goals, before making a decision on your future.

Recently I helped a long term client who was struggling to provide a solution for one of their clients. They realized that they did not have the skills in-house to complete the project. Rather than continue to waste time and resources they drew upon their team of outside experts. In this case I was able to help them complete the project and keep a client.

Mr. Otto quickly discovered the power of choosing employees and vendors that were dedicated to his business. Having the right team is what made his business and got him through difficult times. This does require an investment, but considering the loses he would have experienced it was worthwhile.

Ask yourself how much money are you losing due to inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and cutting edge competitors? Early on I asked myself these questions when reviewing my businesses strengths and weaknesses and found that where I lacked knowledge and experience was in sales. After speaking with various people I was convinced to hire a sales consultant and trainer. This relationship while expensive is vital to my company’s success.

I invite you to do an analysis of your business to find out your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Don’t be afraid to ask for help to make your organization as vital, exciting, and fun as possible. As Jonathan Otto said at the end of his presentation to area business owners, “We all want to be happy.”
